Nowadays Manipur issue is a topic of discussion, Manipur is located in the east of India which is known for its rich culture and natural beauty, however in recent times Manipur is facing some problems which include ethnic conflicts, social and political issues within the state.
Today we will try to find out the reasons for unrest in Manipur and find solutions to deal with these problems and discuss the approach of Indian government on this.
Causes of the Manipur Issue
Ethnic Tensions
The state of Manipur is mainly inhabited by Meitei, Naga and Kuki communities and there is competition among them for resources, which leads to tensions and recently the demand for granting scheduled tribe status to the Meitei community has increased ethnic tensions in the state.
Land and Territorial Disputes
There is also a dispute between the government and the local people over land. Recently there is also a dispute over the government’s encroachment policy, especially forest land, which has increased the conflict between the government and the local people.
Religious Differences
Sometimes there is a dispute between the Meitei, Naga and Kuki communities over religious practices, which leads to new disputes.
Insurgency and Armed Groups
The state of Manipur has been the center of militant movements for many years. Some militant groups associated with ethnic communities try to create violence and instability by inciting castes from time to time.
Weak Governance
Welfare schemes often do not reach the affected communities due to mismanagement in governance in the state, leading to loss of trust in the state machinery and thus deteriorating the relationship between the government and the people.

The state becomes economically backward due to violence, which causes great damage to the economy of the state.
The work that the state should do for the development of its citizens and industrial development, after the violence, the entire focus of the state government is on rebuilding the violence-affected areas.
Lack of Trust
Repeated violence leads to a loss of trust between the state government and the citizens, after which mutual harmony becomes challenging.

The Indian government has taken the Manipur issue seriously and has taken some steps to deal with this crisis like –
Development Initiatives
Recently the government has paid special attention to the development of Manipur and the northeastern states and has started many welfare projects, which has established better connectivity with the northeastern states. Development is taking place at a rapid pace.
Deployment of Security Forces
Violence often starts with the spread of misinformation, to stop which the government shuts down the internet and if the violence escalates, paramilitary and military forces are deployed for that.
Peace Talks and Dialogue
The central and state government have initiated peace talks with ethnic groups several times to resolve the Manipur issue and find a solution to their grievances.
Opposition to Armed Groups
The government is gradually finding a way to negotiate with the groups causing unrest in Manipur and appealing them to give up arms so that they come to the mainstream and contribute to the development of the state.
Discussion on Special Status and Autonomy
The government is considering giving more autonomy to the tribal areas to improve the living standards of the Meitei community.
Despite all this, the government is facing criticism on the Manipur issue as some groups are accusing it of favouring one over the other and the opposition is focusing more on politics rather than helping solve the Manipur issue.
Road to Reconciliation
Communities need to focus on solving problems through dialogue among themselves as violence is not the solution to any problem.
The government should hold talks with representatives of all communities and listen carefully to their problems so that they can be resolved.
The government should focus more on employment and education so that people do not fall prey to the appeals of extremists.
Conclusion
The Manipur issue is a complex problem which should be resolved through dialogue and the Indian government should take steps accordingly. If the previous governments had taken this problem seriously, the matter would not have reached this stage.
